Windy City Open - Chicago Curling Club

Team Clingan, minus Aaron plus Pat Connolly, made the trek to Chicago Curling Club on the North side of Chicago to participate in the Windy City Open.  While we had a good run the results didn't show in the end finishing 1-3.  Some things that we found the most challenging was adapting to ice conditions at two different locations.  This speil occurs both at Chicago Curling Club and at Exmoor Country Club, both beautiful facilities but with incredibly different ice surfaces.  Chicago curling club has a more traditional club curling ice feel and is well maintained and very consistent, Exmoor...

2017 Arena Nationals In Retrospective

Honestly, this was one of the most amazing weeks in my curling life.  We didn't win the gold or any medal for that matter, but at the end of the week both Curl Troy teams were in contention to make the playoffs and by the end of the tournament had the respect of all of our competitors.  The week started on Tuesday evening with a warm welcome reception from USCA and a chance to watch a couple of the women's draws.  An early morning on Wednesday brought on a practice which none of our players had ever experienced.  30 minutes of practice divided among each of the 5 sheets.  It was an...

Don't Overthink Ice Tracking

We play on some "special" ice surfaces to say the least, and we regularly have to play some considerably altered strategy to succeed in a game.  This is impossible to avoid, however we can't let it consume us from a strategy point of view.  Consider some of these tips for making the most of sometimes poor ice conditions:

  • Avoid automatically using the opposite handle - We use the opposite handle a lot, and sometimes it isn't avoidable, but it isn't always necessary.  Pay attention to how falls and ridges play both ways and use them to your advantage.
  • Pay close
  • ...

Starting with their previous board meeting and moving forward the Curl Troy Board of Directors will utilize BlueSky Meeting for our board meeting management.  This tool keeps track of agendas, minutes, and meeting schedules, and allows us to share those things with our members so that they are as informed as possible.  You can visit our board's documents at

Three Curl Troy Teams Traveling for Bonspiels this weekend

This weekend is a big bonspieling weekend for Curl Troy members. 2 Teams are headed to Leamingon, Ontario, for the Sun Parlour Curling Club's annual Glow Spiel on Saturday. They're looking forward to hog roasts and an uneventful pass across the boarder. The other team is headed to Bowling Green, OH to spiel on their new dedicated ice in the St. Patrick's Day spiel. It's Mel's first chance to play on dedicated ice.
Safe travels and good curling to all!

What's the Best Strategy?

By far the most common question I get asked by new curlers, and even some of our more experienced curlers is "Whats the best strategy here".  Strategy is complex, and that is often a very difficult question to answer because of the ice conditions we play on.  Traditional strategies of play to the outside with the hammer and play the middle without the hammer don't work when there is a big ridge down the middle that allows anyone to hit anything, or a fall in the wings that means you can't play the 12 ft. or 8 ft. rings.  This causes skips to think sometimes a little too far outside the box...

Updated Riverscape League Schedule (Feb 11, 2017)

Fellow curlers,
To quote from the movie Flash Gordon, “Seemingly there is no reason for these extraordinary intergalactic upsets. This morning's unprecedented solar eclipse is no cause for alarm” basically describes the Tuesday night curling league with reference to the weather being unseasonably warm and unpredictable, which is unprecedented in our history of curling at RiverScape.
To play the full 6 games you registered for, we have to get a little creative, be a little flexible, and get a little lucky.
As of now, Tuesday night curlers have Feb. 14, Feb...

Build Our House Kickoff

It has been six years since Curl Troy was founded, so it is with great excitement that we announce that Curl Troy is officially beginning the process of bringing a dedicated curling facility to the Dayton and Miami Valley area.  We are calling this campaign "Build Our House”.

Over the last month, the Curl Troy Board of Directors has worked hard to realign our operations so that the organization's resources and energy can be directed towards our journey to a dedicated ice facility.

We need your help though to make this happen. This is a formal call to both...
